Privacy policy

Census collects no data. This page spells out what that means for the app and for this website.

The app

Census runs entirely on your Mac. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no third-party code, and it makes no network connections. It reads the folders you choose to count the files in them, and watches them so the count stays current. It shows you the counts and keeps them only in memory while it is open. It never writes to, moves or deletes your files on its own. The one change it can make is moving a folder to the Trash, when you choose that and confirm it. It keeps its settings and the list of recent places on your Mac, and they stay there.

This website

The site serves a few static pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. The server processes your IP address to answer the request, as any web server does, and keeps no access logs.

Distribution through Apple

The app is distributed through the Mac App Store, which Apple operates under its own privacy policy. If you have chosen to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple forwards crash reports and aggregate usage figures in anonymised form. Nothing in them identifies you to us.

Contact

Neither the app nor this site stores personal data, so there is nothing we could look up, hand over or delete on request. Questions are welcome at census@smeingast.eu.

Effective 6 September 2026. If a future version of the app changes any of this, this page changes with it. Back to the main page.
